Position Title: Program Assistant - Lifeguard

Corps/Department: Salvation Army, King's Lake Camp

Reports To: Youth Program Specialist/Protect The Mission Coordinator

FLSA Status: Temporary, Full-time; Non-Exempt

Dates of Employment: June 18, 2024 - August 5, 2024

Rate of Pay: $380.00/week

Scope of Position: Provide a complete waterfront program that contributes to fulfillment of the goals and objectives of King's Lake Camp, including swimming and waterfront safety, while maintaining a safe program area. Assist Program Specialist with planning and implementing camp events and activity programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must pass all background checks required by The Salvation Army.
  2. Must be at least 16 years of age.
  3. Provide proof of current Lifeguard Training Certification, including First Aid, CPR and AED.
  4. Prior work experience in camp setting, preferred.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work with young people ages 7 years and older.
  6. Must perform duties efficiently and demonstrate good judgment.
  7. Room and Board is provided as Program Assistant - Lifeguard must be able to stay at camp while camp is in session.

Essential Functions:

  1. Responsible for organizing and monitoring all waterfront activities (waterfront is a lake and there is no pool).
  2. Initiate a strict waterfront program in keeping with Red Cross and State of Alaska requirements.
  3. Maintain canoes and paddleboats to ensure proper working order.
  4. Provide for the constant watch and supervision of campers and staff during swim and boating periods.
  5. Test and classify swimming abilities of staff and campers.
  6. Utilize staff abilities to best advantage in carrying out the waterfront program and instruct counselors assigned to waterfront duties.
  7. Enforce rules of the waterfront and camper discipline.
  8. Prior to each swim session, make sure all areas including dock, boat house, and beach area are clean and in order.
  9. Know emergency procedures and be prepared to execute them in an emergency.
  10. Assist in other camp activities during scheduled waterfront time, if waterfront is closed for any reason.
  11. Assist Youth Program Specialist with activity and event program planning and implementation.
  12. Attend and participate in camp programs.
  13. Assist Camp Counselors, including standing in as Camp Counselor.
  14. Actively participate in the spiritual formation of campers and staff.
  15. Ensure campers respect personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  16. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  17. Ensure campers adhere to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  18. Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  19. Maintain a standard of cleanliness in personal grooming and living quarters.
  20. Assists in clean-up of the camp at the end of sessions/summer.
  21. Assists with all other duties as assigned.

Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a variety of cool to warm weather conditions.. May require being out in wet weather for extended periods of time.

Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to speak, sit, walk, stand, bend, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp, reach, handle, finger, push or pull objects.
  2. Ability to see and hear at normal ranges with corrective devices, if necessary.
  3. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., or more with assistance.
